Caprese-Aufmacherbild-DesOlive-News

Simple yet so good: Our Caprese appetizer salad recipe.

This Italian classic is the perfect food for hot summer days. Dressed with DesOlive® extra virgin olive oil from the Maremma and our “Gourmet Condimento”, the salad will make you dream of Italy with every bite. We promise!

Ingredients for Insalata Caprese:

  • Mozzarella
  • Tomatoes
  • Fresh basil
  • Olive oil
  • A few splashes of vinegar depending on taste.
  • Salt and pepper

Tomato, mozzarella, basil: few ingredients, lots of flavour

Caprese is a simple, quick dish made from a few ingredients. This makes the quality of the individual ingredients even more important! The key to successful caprese are the tomatoes: they should be sun-ripened and particularly aromatic. Whether you opt for mozzarella made from cow's or buffalo's milk, is a matter of taste and is up to you. You should pick the basil leaves fresh.

How to prepare the Caprese

In the traditional preparation, both the tomatoes and the mozzarella are cut into slices about 0.5cm thick. First cut out the stem from the tomatoes.

Then arrange the salad by alternately placing a slice of tomato and mozzarella on a plate. Finally, whole basil leaves, washed and shaken dry, are distributed on the salad.

However, you can also vary the caprese, for example by using mini mozzarella and cherry tomatoes and carefully mixing them with the basil in a deep plate. Or by putting the three ingredients alternately on a wooden skewer.

The Caprese becomes refined finger food, for example for your garden party, when you serve it in small glasses: with a base of basil froth, on which a mini mozzarella and a cherry tomato sit.

The spice of the salad, best Italian olive oil and vinegar

The icing on the cake is the fine seasoning of the salad with a good olive oil such as our cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil from Tuscany and Lazio: a spicy-fruity pleasure, either with a mild taste or the characteristic sharpness of early harvested olives. Depending on your preference, the salad can also be dressed with a little vinegar. Try your Caprese with our elegant “Condimento Rosé Gourmet di Modena”, our “Gourmet Condimento Bianco denso di Modena” or with the classic ”Aceto Balsamico di Modena” by DesOlive® whose bitter-sweet aroma was allowed to mature for nine years.
